The Day's Program
Deputy Fire Chief Joe Schrage is both a paramedic and a firefighter. He has been with the HP Fire Department for 17 years. Having served as union president, Joe is also in charge of the department's accreditation. With Joe's dedication to accreditation, the department's paramedics and firefighters are the best.  The recent addition of Highwood to their response area has been a seamless transition for the department. They strive to respond to a call within seven minutes - they usually arrive within five.

Like many departments across the country, the HPFD has made the necessary changes to meet the needs of the community during this pandemic. They have increased and expanded their PPE and changed the way they think about providing services by limiting their exposure to the public. Gone for the time being are the pancake breakfast days and open houses at the stations. They've learned to reach out to the public by increasing their presence on social media. This month the department received a grant to purchase carbon monoxide detectors. These will be be distributed through the Highwood library to families receiving food assistance.

Joe explained why when a rescue squad is requested, a fire truck also shows up. It is because the department's trucks are equipped with advanced life support, essentially making their rescue squads and fire trucks mobile emergency rooms. Coming to the aid of the public in the time of a pandemic means that for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, even the American Heart Association is recommending to perform chest compressions because that will keep the oxygen in our blood flowing until a one-way oxygen mask can be applied.

Steps that we can take for now is to keep on hand a personal protection kit containing masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. The Deputy Chief also stressed the three W's - wear a mask, wash your hands, and watch your distance.

When it comes to wanting to help someone who is down, Joe recommends you look at what is going on around you and the other person: for instance, is there traffic barreling down the road or a live electrical wire on the ground? Always call 9-1-1 first before you begin CPR either by yourself or with someone.

The members expressed their gratitude for the department's response to calls for their families, friends and neighbors. Among those stories, for seniors who have fallen, a personal alert system would have helped, especially those living alone. They are waterproof and can be used in the shower in case of a fall or other medical emergencies. Even a cell phone kept close at hand is suggested.
