Announcements

At the Annual Rotary Foundation Celebration on November 3 at the Schaumburg Hyatt, the Highland Park-Highwood Rotary Club was recognized and presented with a banner to honor our $1 Million Total Giving to The Rotary Foundation Clubs. This is a legacy award, accepted by Club President Eric Ephraim, that recognizes our club's long history of service above self and unending support of Rotary Foundation projects dedicated to lifting up the less fortunate and making the world a better place. Keynote speaker and Rotary International Director Pat Merryweather-Arges spoke about all the places our contributions are going and gave eyewitness testimony to the differences they are making, from our years-long effort to stamp out polio in the world, to food relief and clean water in Africa, to the ACE Global Grant Scholar and the ACE Café Voca new business start-up here in District 6440, the dollars we give and the work we do through Rotary is a privilege for us and a blessing to others.

Rotary Climate Action Team Invitation
Dear President Ephraim,

My name is John Mathers, Past President of the Rotary Club of San Francisco (which is the second oldest Rotary Club in the world) and Co-Chair of the Rotary Climate Action Team (RCAT) Network. I am sending the Rotary Club of Highland Park-Highwood a special invitation to participate in our Global Climate Action Forum from Assisi Italy on November 26, 2022. The purpose of this global event is to challenge ourselves and our clubs to take climate action in 2023. Our natural world is under threat from drought, flooding, fire, ocean acidification, mega-storms and much more. Francis of Assisi, the first true environmentalist, calls on us to act: “Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” Why should your club participate in the Assisi Forum? - It addresses the “Environment” which is Rotary’s newest 7th area of focus. - It is available from the comfort of your home. - It helps to “build bridges” with other Rotary Clubs. Currently over 900 Rotary clubs in 92 countries have committed to act to address climate change. Rotary is used to taking on BIG challenges and now is the time for us to tackle this crisis! To participate in the Assisi Forum, simply go to our website and register. Go directly to our registration link: https://www.distretto2090.it/assisiclimateaction/ Once you have registered, we will send you Forum and Challenge 2023 materials to share online or with your members. Thank you for participating in this very important global effort. We look forward to working with you and your members! Yours in Rotary, John G. Mathers Co-Chair RCAT Network Rotary Club of San Francisco, California, USA https://assisiclimateaction.com/ https://www.globalclimatepledge.com/ https://rcatnow.com/

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
to sort donations to Northwood Gives Back at the school on Friday, December 9, from 3:30 to 8:00. We are envisioning 2 hour shifts, but lesser commitments are welcome.  We also are looking for volunteer drivers on Saturday, December 10, to deliver the sorted goods to 4 families. Each volunteer will be paired with an Interact member who will do the "leg work". Times can be arranged.

Both of these activities will involve the Interact Club. It is your chance to work side by side with this amazing group of teens.

Volunteers should contact Len Tenner at 847-421-5329 or lrtenner@yahoo.com.

SAVE THE DATE!

Our Annual Holiday Party is Friday, December 6th at 6p at Fred & Sylvia Orkin's!
You what that means - Mary Beth would like baby pictures to "Stump the Rotarians"
and we will again have the gift grab/white elephant with a $20.00 limit.
Since it's been a while, chocolate and wine always go over very well.

Happy Dollars

You don't have to wait until meeting day to share your happiness! Click on the yellow box below, donate your happy dollars and then email Mary Beth at hphwrotary@gmail.com and tell her what you're happy about!

This week, members were thankful for: Eric Ephraim was happy for our guest and fellow Rotarian, Ben Jagim, and for our speakers. He also gave us his weekly report about his oldest son (a college freshman) continues to be the starting receiver for his Oberlin football (frosh and soph) team still hasn't won a game. He was also able to see his other son last weekend too! Rhoda Pierce was happy she won her re-election bid - and she will be by to pick her signs very soon! Len Tenner was very excited that the school referendum FINALLY passed! Bill Pigati congratulated Rhoda on her win, and announced Del Rio is starting it's 47th season of opera tomorrow! Spaces fill up fast so call now! Karen Dennis was happy to back. She and Allan, along with their Green Bay Packer fan/friends went to see the game against the Buffalo Bills in New York. Karen and Allan were happy the Bills beat the Packers - their GB friends, not so much.  Dale Mugler was happy and proud of his wife Karla who is president of the Delta Gamma area group. She and her Delta Gamma Girls created cards with a Veterans' theme for Veteran's Day. When they contacted the VA hospital in North Chicago, they learned of a program to call a veteran every week. Dale felt it might be a great project for our Club. There is some initiation of the process. Ron Borden was happy that his grandson, a senior in high school, has been accepted to 6 colleges and universities!  Our guest, Ben Jagim was happy to be hear. He recently moved from North Dakota where he is a part of the Happy Hour Club (he's come to the right place). He and his family moved here for his wife's job at Abbvie.

The Day's Program
Today we welcomed Kathleen Gummerson who is the regional marketing & Sales Consultant for Village Green Management, and Caitlin Boniface who is the onsite sales consultant for Albion Highland Park. They shared with us the different stages of their plans. The first phase is about 96% sold. That facility faces Sunset Woods. The second phase is the one under construction at the corner of Second and Elm. There are numerous floor plans and amenities. They hope to have open houses soon.

We missed those of you who couldn't make it - we hope to see you soon!

This and That
Interact News from Ida and Brad

Ida and Brad wanted to share this letter the Interact Students received:

Good Afternoon Lilliana, et al.,
Thank you for all for your time, enthusiasm, and unbridled capacity for doing good.

I have worked with many student volunteer groups (both with the City & open lands) over the years and you all are, by far, the most passionate, invested, and efficient in executing whatever task is before you. The attitude and dedication to the HP community that interact brings to the table deserves commendation.

You certainly have my gratitude and thanks from your community for many facets in which you serve.

We will certainly be in touch if additional opportunities arise and I wish you all a wonderful holiday season,

Ben Miller
City Forester

Editor's note: These incredible students and their facilitators never cease to amaze me!
