January 6th - Terri Olian is the Executive Director of Highland Park Community Foundation - she serves on the board with a few other names you might recognize - Eric Ephraim and Jon Levey! Being a longtime HP resident, helping people in this community is her super power. Every year they honor three individuals in additions to fulfilling grants for local nonprofits. The individuals fall into three categories: The HPCF Golden Apple for an outstanding teacher, the Jack Blaine Community Service Award, and the Personal Achievement Award for an HPHS student who has shown exceptional perseverance in the pursuit of personal goals despite significant challenges.
The local nonprofits they support call into a few categories - education, cultural arts, and human services which includes housing, legal, mental and food insecurity,
Terri is will our Honoree at out Annual Gala, which is May 15th at Exmoor. More details to follow.
January 20th - Cynthia Phon is Director of House of Welcome Adult Day Services and Senior Options for North Shore Senior Center. NSSC is different from out local Park District Senior Centers. This is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1956 that is funded through program fees, donations, grants. It serves and engages over 24,000 older adults and their families each year in 39 communities. Headquartered in Northfield, with additional Senior & Family Services offices in Niles and Glenview, they focus on the following: Lifelong Learning, Memory Care Programs, Senior Options, Senior & Family Services, and Volunteer Services.
Cynthia spoke about Dementia. Signs of Moderate Stage Dementia are:
•Decline in verbal skills and increase in repetitive behaviors
•Increase confusion and disorientation
•Poor judgment
•Visual-perceptual and physical difficulties
•Difficulty with personal care (dressing, bathing, grooming, eating, etc.)
•Some incontinence
•Mood changes (e.g. depressions, apathy, anxiety)
•Not safe for person to be alone or drive
Signs of Late Stage Dementia:
•Inability to communicate
•Severe memory loss
•Decline in motor skills
•Dependent on others for personal care
•Incontinent
•May not recognize close family members or themselves
•Need 24/7 support and supervision
