The Day's Program
Nancy Tuchman is Dean of the Institute for Environmental Sustainability at Loyola University Chicago. She shared with the Club how a previous President of the University set the school on its path to ecological sustainability.

In 2002, the goal of transforming the campus  to eliminate their carbon footprint and began the research. When they looked at the Energy putout of their old buildings on campus, the university had 120 EUI (energy use intensity). Eighteen years later they have brought that number down to 35 EUI! Their goal is 20.

The University has taken a two prong approach to this goal - the campus environment footprint and education. Many buildings they were able to retrofit. They now have 91 geothermal wells that are 500 feet deep, a 3100 square foot greenhouse and two aquaponic facilities. They also taken the used fat from the fryers in their kitchens, also from DePaul and Northwestern. They convert that fat into biodiesel fuel which is used for LUC's shuttle buses and some is sold back to Northwestern for their shuttles as well. Glycerin is a byproduct of theis process and they have made bio soap - business students creating business plans for that as well as the farmers market where they sell the vegetables and the tilapia they raise as part of the aquaponic program. They are currently making hand sanitizer.

As far as the education side is concerned, they brought professors into the school who teach about the environment and its many facets. They developed an inter-disciplinary curriculum. Students take the basic science of ecology course, then 2 more courses are required like Environmental Ethics, Conservation & Restoration  and Environmental Health.

Their efforts have been recognized by many environmental organizations like Sierra Club and Retrofit Chicago

Nancy and her family live in Highland Park. Her suggestions for each of us to do to help our environment were to compost, and eat less red meat - raising cattle takes more resources and produces more methane gas.
