Happy Dollars
This week, Club members were happy for: Karen Dennis was happy for the wonderful couple of days spent with Allan and friends up north; Mike Lubelfeld was happy to report the D112 schools are thriving, and learning is back to pre-pandemic levels - and he was very happy to see everyone in person! Eric Ephraim was happy to be here and to have Mike Lubelfeld in the house; Fred Orkin was happy for his raffle win today and to see everyone; Len Tenner was hoping Mike Lubelefeld would be joining us next week, but Mike is traveling, so Len wished him bon voyage instead; and finally, Rhoda Pierce reminded everyone that Dan's memorial service is this Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Congregation Makon Solel Lakeside   1301 Clavey Road.

You don't have to wait until meeting day to share your happiness! Click on the yellow box below, donate your happy dollars and then email Mary Beth at hphwrotary@gmail.com and tell her what you're happy about!

The Day's Program
State Senator Julie Morrison came to extend an invitation to help foster children this holiday season by donating new pajamas, socks or mittens. The collection period is October 15th - November 15th. Sizes from newborn to teenagers are needed. Although she didn't have a number for Lake County children in foster care, there are about 15,000 within Illinois. The Club will collect these items at our November 10th meeting.

Senator Morrison also gave the Club an update on a few of her bills. One bill that she presented was on underage vaping. The marketing to children and teens by offering fruity or exotic flavors has pulled them into trying and becoming addicted. School bathrooms are now referred to as the "vaping chambers" by students. When she researched vaping, she discovered that RJ Reynolds owns most of those vaping companies. Now when kids use their parents credit card to purchase nicotine cartridges online, her bill states the company must note the purchase of these cartridges must appear as nicotine cartridges so parents are aware of this transaction.  (Side note: Mike Lubelfeld agreed that vaping is a BIG problem among students.)

Another bill in the works is a bill that makes it easier and safer to vote. In the last election one third of voters voted by mail, one third by early in person and the final third in person on election day. It also created greater penalties for harassment of election judges and poll watchers (who earn very little for a long day's work). Harassment was reported in Cook County more so than in Lake County.

The last bill she talked about was the re-districting map. With the new map, there are a couple of organizations that are contesting the map. One of these groups is a Latino organization that feels the new map does not represent them fairly.

She left with a few ideas for future bills to help those children in foster care by making it easier and faster to be adopted. Currently it takes several years. However, she did not answer Neil's question as to when we will stop changing the clocks for daylight savings, because Neil is the only person that has ever asked her about that. laugh
