We had the pleasure to hear from the Interact Board members who attended the RI convention in Calgary. They were all wearing their white cowboy hats - something worn by everyone in attendance, especially at the rodeo they attended. They were among 3 or 4 Interact groups there and got to meet some exchange students who shared their experiences about living in a foreign country. Some of the speakers they heard from were Rotaract leaders who spoke about transitioning from Interact to Rotaract and from RYLA leaders from the planning side of the program. Being among the younger attendees, they were often greeted and peppered with lots of questions. The students all kept journals of their experiences and shared them with us. They participated in tree planting, welcoming Rotarians at the Calgary Zoo, and were part of the Booth of Friendship. Not only did they get to trade pins with Rotarians, but they made 200 friendship bracelets with positive messages before they left for the convention. The bracelets were a big hit! Of course, for the students, one memorable moment was the ceremony of flags, and how with so much diversity, they - we - all have one common goal - Service Above Self. They loved hearing all the different stories, learning about other projects going on, and learned that you can be a part of Rotary no matter where you’re in the world. All of them agreed that they left Calgary inspired and changed. - mb OUR NEXT MEETING IS AUGUST 12TH at 1p at First Bank of Highland Park If anyone else has ideas, has some time on their hands, or has a friend they think would love to know more about Rotary, please respond to this email. |
