Notes From the January 25th Meeting
President Dale Mugler opened the meeting by greeting members and our guest speaker, member Gabrielle Cummings. We recited the Four Way Test.

Dale thanked all the members and Interact students who helped collect and transport the donated items to Lake County PADS as part of our MLK Jr, Day of Service. Kudos went out to Ghida Neukirch for making the arrangements and getting the word out.

When our club approached Mike Lubelfeld how we could help the students, he said he needed help with hungry students. Working with Mike, and Frank Lomoro, Paul Munk has secured Sunset Foods gift cards that will be distributed through Mike's office.

International Chair Jeff Colman and President-Elect Karen Dennis have been hard at work securing presenters and facilitators for our virtual TABU conference. It will take place over two weekends in March (the 6th and 13th) with 12 HPHS students and 12 Northern Ireland students. More information to follow.

Happy Dollars
Members were happy for: Paul Munk was happy to be celebrating his tenth Rotary anniversary! Len Tenner donated for Paul's milestone, as did Karen Dennis. Dale Mugler donated because his tech company will be pitching to the D.O.D. this week; Paul Clements for his daughter Veronica's painting won one of three jurist awards at the gallery where it is exhibited. She is teaching and working very hard to make her art dreams come true; and May Beth Bretzlauf for everyone's happiness.

ORDERING PIZZA IN THE NEAR FUTURE

CALLER: Is this Pizza Hut?
GOOGLE: No sir, it's Google Pizza.
CALLER: I must have dialed a wrong number, sorry.
GOOGLE: No sir, Google bought Pizza Hut last month.
CALLER: OK. I would like to order a pizza.
GOOGLE: Do you want your usual, sir?
CALLER: My usual? You know me?
GOOGLE: According to our caller ID data sheet, the last 12 times you called you ordered an extra-large pizza with three cheeses, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and meatballs on a thick crust.
CALLER: Super! That’s what I’ll have.
GOOGLE: May I suggest that this time you order a pizza with ricotta, arugula, sundried tomatoes and olives on a whole wheat gluten-free thin crust?
CALLER: What? I don’t want a vegetarian pizza!
GOOGLE: Your cholesterol is not good, sir.
CALLER: How the hell do you know that?
GOOGLE: Well, we cross-referenced your home phone number with your medical records. We have the result of your blood tests for the last 7 years.
CALLER: Okay, but I do not want your rotten vegetarian pizza! I already take medication for my cholesterol.
GOOGLE: Excuse me sir, but you have not taken your medication regularly. According to our database, you purchased only a box of 30 cholesterol tablets once at Lloyds Pharmacy, 4 months ago.
CALLER: I bought more from another Pharmacy.
GOOGLE: That doesn’t show on your credit card statement.
CALLER: I paid in cash.
GOOGLE: But you did not withdraw enough cash according to your bank statement.
CALLER: I have other sources of cash.
GOOGLE: That doesn’t show on your latest tax returns, unless you bought them using an undeclared income source, which is against the law!
CALLER: WHAT THE HELL!
GOOGLE: I'm sorry sir, we use such information only with the sole intention of helping you.
CALLER: Enough already! I'm sick to death of Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and all the others. I'm going to an island without the internet, TV, where there is no phone service and no one to watch me or spy on me.
GOOGLE: I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport first. It expired 6 weeks ago.
The Day's Program
Our Speaker, Gabrielle Cummings, is the President of Highland Park Hospital which is part of the NorthShore University HealthSystem (NSUHS). The system includes Evanston, Glenbrook and Northwest Community Healthcare, Skokie and Swedish. She thanked those who have shown support for their healthcare workers - some putting roses on their cars, sending meals and making signs.

The mission statement of the hospital is "To be the most trusted and indispensable health partner throughout the community we serve." As part of the NorthShore system, HPH has reviewed their support teams, testing, acute care delivery, community access and outreach, just to name some of the critical areas of care they provide every minute of every day. With information about the COVID-19 virus and vaccinations changing almost hourly, adaptability and preparedness are key to serving the community that entrusted the hospital with their health.

Gabrielle gave an update on the hospital's role during the pandemic: all services are open, there is a restriction on visitors (example: only one other person in  Labor & Delivery, otherwise, no visitors), there are screeners at all entrances, and now there is an electronic tool for COVID-19 symptom clearance.

The hospital's has been working with the Illinois Department of Public Health, Lake County Health Department, first responders, skilled nursing facilities and businesses with community messaging on prevention, awareness, testing and  best practices. They also have provided test processing for an IDPH testing site. They sent over 600 emails to religious leaders, first responders, school superintendents and local officials on the precautions that should be taken and the hospital's resources. HPH (and NSUHS) has also made contributions to local agencies to assist communities negatively impacted by the pandemic. The system also secured 11,000 COVID-19 care kits for patients recovering at home.

COVID-19 by the numbers (NSUHS):
  • 87,483 Super site immediate care visits
  • 116,873 eVisits
  • 114,850 Health calls answered
  • 77, 180 Drive-thru tests
  • 196.029 COVID-19 test administered
  • 38,361 Positive COVID-19 results
  • 22,002 Antibody tests
  • 900 - 1000 tests taken a day
  • 31,977 COVID positive , not admitted
  • 2,261 Discharged
  • 60 Current hospitalization
  • 509 Deceased
Gabrielle stressed the guidelines - "Wash up, Mask up, Back up" and now "Roll your sleeve up" for your vaccination. As far as the vaccinations go, she advised all of us to be patient.
