Pearls of the Club
The purpose of life is a life of purpose.

 - Robert Byrne

Notes From the March 2nd Meeting
President Paul Munk welcomed Club members, guests Nancy Sawe Robluch, David Reich and Terry Olian, who led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Club recited the Four Way Test.
From the President:
Coronavirus. Please know that Rotary International is monitoring the coronavirus outbreak.  As the health and safety of our members is our top priority, we are monitoring the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak on a daily basis to assess its potential impact on our meetings, training, and events.  We are an international organization and our members are world travelers. Please be aware of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). As of right now, Hawaii Conference is still on
District Training Assembly, Harper College, March 28th at 8 AM - PETS prepares and inspires presidents-elect to lead their clubs. Dale is attending that this weekend.  The next, most critical, step is building a team and setting direction.  That requires training, ideas, and collaboration.  And that’s what the District Training Assembly on Saturday, March 28, will provide: District Assembly registration opens today Monday March 2. If you’re new to the board come July, I urge you to consider attending
Public Image Matching Grant:  Deadline for application extended to June 15th. We received this $250 Grant back in December, but we are yet to receive the check, so I confess I don’t know the cause of the delay.
Change in Gala Theme: As you know our original plan was to dedicate that evening to honoring Dan and Rhoda Pierce. With Dan’s passing and the public service scheduled for the day following our Gala, it obviously didn’t make sense to go down that path. So our new theme for the evening is “Power of Youth Service”, and we will feature the faculty advisors that enable this to take place, with our support, both in District 112 and District 113. Northwood Gives Back, and Interact.
Incidentally, Paul has been contacted by Deerfield Rotary – they want to start an Interact Club at Deerfield HS. I haven’t had the conversation yet, but trust me when I tell you that I will stress the importance of the right faculty sponsor/advisor.
Environmental Task Force:  New area of focus for Rotary -newly formed: The Environmental Task Force is composed of ten Rotarians passionate about the environment who are available to serve as a support and resource to your club. I would like for our club consider participating, and I am still looking for a volunteer member who would act as a liaison with this group and be our environment champion. Interested – let me know

The Day's Program
David Reich, Chairman of Highland Park Community Foundation, and Terri Olian, a long time member of the organization gave Club members an update on the broad outreach of the Foundation. The mission of HPCF is to assist through grants, either government agencies (like the HP Library) or a 501(c)(3). Programs should benefit at least 51% of Highland Park or Highwood residents.
Last year, HPCF received 56 grant applications requesting almost three quarters of a million dollars! A total of 50 grants were awarded $525,000. That left over $200,000 in requests unfunded. We are familiar with so many of the organizations HPCF helps:
A Safe Place
Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center
Curt's cafe
The Art Center Highland Park
Highland Park Strings
HP Historical Society
HP Public Library
Northern Illinois Food Bank
Tri-Con Child Care Center
Mothers Trust Foundation
Blessings in a Backpack
   just to name a few!
The Foundation had a very successful annual fundraiser they held at Binny's. Their next fundraiser will be October 2, 2020.
David Reich brings nearly 10 years of previous Board experience to his role as Chairman of the Highland Park Community Foundation. He served as Vice-Chairman from 2017-2019 and Secretary of the Foundation from 2014-2017. He has chaired the Grants Committee for the past 6 years, during which time the number of grant recipients has grown to 50 organizations receiving a total of $525,000 in 2019.
Born and raised in Highland Park, David is a partner at the law firm of Lawrence Kamin and works closely with family and small to midsize businesses to manage their corporate needs as well as assist business owners and individuals with their estate and succession planning.
Mr. Reich has also been an active community volunteer serving on the Board of Directors of the Modestus Bauer Foundation and the Israel Cancer Research Fund for more than 20 years. Deeply committed to the Highland Park/Highwood community, David is pleased to bring his experience and leadership skills to his role as Chairman of the Foundation.
Thanks to Mike Babian for his notes!
