The Day's Program
February 1st - We learned February is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and welcomed Nicoleta Girloanta and Brendan Sigfried from CASA Lake County. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. Nicoleta and Brendan shared with us the many services CASA provides for children who are removed from their homes due to traumatic events. Those victims of events like neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse are faced with upheaval - from all aspects of their lives. Sometimes it can be a new home, new school, no familiar faces. The CASA volunteers build trust by listening to the child/children and their needs. The volunteer speaks for the child in court and takes on a two year commitment. Many stay in communication with the child long after the two years. CASA supports children until they are 21. Those wanting to become a volunteer can go to CASA's website, casalakecounty.com

February 8th - This week we welcomed former HPHS graduate, Julia Foos. Julia is the Community Educator for Sarah's Inn. Sarah's Inn is located in Oak Park and despite the name, is not a shelter for victims of domestic violence. It does, however, provide free services for these victims. The mission is to improve the lives of those affected by domestic violence and to break the cycle for future generations. The organization receives their money from fundraisers and from grants through the state. Sarah's Inn primarily helps the western Cook County and Chicago areas, many times collaborating with CASA. The services are free to those they serve, except that of the behavioral counseling of the abusers. You can find more information on their website, www.sarahsinn.org
