Globally, 5 billion people lack access to safe surgery. Children, teens, and adults suffer and die every day from treatable causes, and one child in eight will die before age 5. Mercy Ships deploy hospital ships to combat this overwhelming statistic. Since over 50% of the world’s population lives near a coast, our ships are the best way to reach them with state-of-the-art medical care. It is a floating surgical center and teaching hospital.
In October of last year, Mercy Ships announced a first look at the construction of the world’s largest NGO hospital ship which plans to sail to Africa in late 2021 under the name of Global Mercy. The creation of this first purpose-built teaching hospital ship wouldn’t have been possible without amazing Rotary clubs and Districts like ours.
In the ‘wake’ of years of planning and partnership, its is almost ready for the next stage of her journey with some finishing touches in Europe ahead of the first field service in Africa. The Global Mercy will help bring hope and healing to hundreds of people in need.
President Dale Mugler opened the meeting by greeting our speaker Annie Aggens, visitors Scott Daniels, John McDonald, Patti Kalal, and members,. We recited the Four Way Test.

Members were happy for: Len Tenner was happy towelcome back Dale Mugler to the North, To welcome back Phil Lazarus from his 17 day trip and to welcome our speaker, Annie Aggens; Karen Dennis was also happy for to listen to 5 hours of chamber music the day before - even dressing up for the occasion!
Our speaker Annie Aggens loved long camping trips in high school and college. That love and experience led her to becoming a guide and soon she found her way into leading groups to the North Pole with The Northwest Passage Travel Company in Wilmette. She'd been with the company since 2000. She is also an expert climatologist.
There are five things Annie wants you to know about the North Pole -
It is a million pieces of frozen ocean - there is no land; Where the ice breaks and hasn't refrozen yet, these are called leads you must cross. Where there are pressure ridges, the ice has collided and created a ridge. You must pull your supply sled over it. while you are on cross-country skis,
There is only one sunrise - from March 21st to September 21st it is daylight all the time. However, travel after April is more treacherous since the ice is thinner;
The North Pole is really, really important to life on Earth, helping to cool the warmer water as it traverses the planet with the oceans' currents;
It is the new geo-political hotspot - Russia has 40 icebreakers compared to the U.S. having only 2. Other countries are trying to catch up. This can be for commercial or military purposes. Whether this will be an area of cooperation or conflict, only time will tell;
It has its own history - stories of ingenuity, success, failure, love, death, and the unyielding human spirit.
The excursions can be as short as three days or as long as 50. The trek is completed on cross country skis as you pull a sled with your supplies. Many people who go on this trip join the company's five day training program. In the off-season, Annie trains by dragging a huge tire behind her going uphill at the park near her Wilmette home. She says she used to the strange looks.
While on the trek, you wear layers upon layers over your thermal underwear- even wearing your batteries to keep them warm. Satellite phones are the only source of communication but your cell phone can be used as your camera. Each day their coordinates are recorded with base camp back in Norway. Because the North Pole is not land, it moves with the ocean current, so you may have gone to sleep at one set of coordinates, and wake up to another. It may often seem like one step forward, two steps back, but Annie knows how to plan the day's trek by following the sun - not from above, but ahead. A compass is useless this far north.
