Notes From the April 27th Meeting

President Karen Dennis greeted our speaker and fellow Rotarian Brian Romes as well as the members in person and online.

PLEASE NOTE: BEGINNING IN MAY,  WE WILL ONLY BE HOSTING HYBRID MEETINGS IF THE SPEAKER IS JOINING US ON ZOOM. We look forward to seeing you back in person! You have been missed!

Don't forget to RSVP and record your order (in the comments box) before Tuesday afternoon so we can send the order ahead to Miramar. Now that the website is set up to accept credit cards, you can pay for your lunch ahead of time. This makes it easier and quicker for Miramar to serve us.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!

City of Highland Park is looking for volunteer counters for the Bike/Walk Count (Move HP).
Since 2012 of Highland Park’s first Bike and Pedestrian Plan, now called MoveHP, the City has been counting walkers and cyclists at various intersections almost semi-annually. These counts help the City plan for future street and sidewalk improvements. Data from past counts has informed the goals in MoveHP, and has enabled the City to receive grants to improve the non-motorized transportation network and to be designated a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.

Planning is underway for the Spring 2022 Bike & Pedestrian count, to be held on May 3, 4 and 7 and we need your help!

There are 5 different time slots and several locations around HP where we'll be counting. This year, we will be using sign up genius to manage the schedule. You may sign up for one or more shifts, but please sign up for only one location per shift. If you'd like to be on call in case of a last minute cancellation, there are spaces to sign up as an alternate for each time slot. The count happens rain or shine. Please share the sign up with others who might be able to help.
There are two locations where we are counting on the west side this year - Clavey and Ridge Road, and Park Ave W and the Skokie Valley Bike Trail. I am definitely hoping some neighbors would be interested in counting at these locations!

A virtual training for new counters will be held on April 21 at 6:30 pm. If you are unable to attend, the training will be recorded and available to view at your convenience.
Prior to the count, we will contact people who have signed up with details and provide everything needed for the count. Please fill in your name, email address and cell phone number so that we can reach you.

And here is the link for sign-ups:

The Day's Program
Jeffrey Haydon and Patrick Gipson from Ravinia joined us for dinner meeting at Froggy's French Café.  Jeffrey said things are back to normal this summer at Ravinia.  They plan 100 events.  This will be the 86th year the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been their orchestra in residence and they will perform 17 concerts.  They will also feature Chicago's artistic gems including Music of the Baroque, Hubbard Street Dance and Chicago Sinfonietta.

Marin Alsop is their principal conductor, and their season will include a Breaking Barriers Festival that she has curated the last week of July focusing on women on the podium.  Jeff referred us to Netflix's The Conductor, a documentary which tells Marin's journey to the podium.  The 3-day festival will have more than the usual music fare all day long including films, a symposium with female CEOs of Chicagoland businesses and more.

James Conlon will be back to conduct Mozart operas in Martin Theatre, and Father's Day will be a Tribute to jazz great pianist, Ramsey Lewis.

Jeff then played a little music from shows that we might not be familiar with including:
  • Flamenco Guitarists/transposed rock music (june 16):  Rodrigo and Gabriela
  • Bluegrass (June 24):  Bela Fleck, Sam Bush & Jerry Douglas
  • New Orleans Jazz/Funk (June 26):  Trombone Shorty
  • Rock side (August 6):  Grade Potter & The Revivalists
  • Contemporary, Amazing Voice (Sept.11):  Erykah Badu
Movies with Orchestra this year orchestra:  The Goonies and Lion King

New this year! Concert tickets are on your phone; allow you to have free train tickets on Metra

We left looking forward to a wonderful summer at Ravinia including a Club Outing there which Mike Babian will work to arrange.

Once again we were joined with Highwood business owners!  Many thanks to Karen Dennis for her report!  -mb
